Be Your Own Guru

“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.”
– Lao Tzu

Your friend will give you advice. Because you need it. Your spiritual teacher will tell you how to pray. Because you need to learn. Your fitness coach will give you a workout plan. Because you need to train without hurting yourself. You read best-selling, self-help books. Because you want to grow and develop.

But, at the end of the day after everyone tell you what’s best for you, there’s only one person who can tell you what’s best. YOU.

No one knows you better than you. No one knows how your body gains weight after one bite of chocolate cake. No one knows who’s the perfect partner for you… or not. No one can tell you the best meditation since you know how your mind works. No self-help book, no matter how well written or if it’s a New York Times best seller, can tell you how to make your life better.

Only you know what’s right for your path because you’re the one living with your choices. You have your own set of challenges, traumas, past hurts, dreams, passions and goals you are dealing with.

I’ve never been comfortable with finding that one and only teacher or guru. Putting teachers on a pedestal hoping they would tell me what to do and everything will be ok never resonated with me. Yes, there are things they can teach me. But, not all of it will fit into my life and who I am. Not all of it will fit into your life and who you are. When working with teachers and leaders, use the skill of discernment to find out what resonates with you. Throw out the rest.

Yes, seeking advice from a trusted friend and reading books is vital to gain knowledge and insight. It’s important to be a life-long student. But, there comes a time when you need to pull wisdom from your inner resources.

Instead of seeking advice for your problems or asking others for answers, look within yourself. Your soul knows what’s best for you. Learn to trust what your soul tells you. Your body will feel it. Your heart will know it. Your mind will hear it.

How can you become your own guru? By asking yourself questions.

Does this make me feel good about myself? Is it aligned with my gifts and beliefs? Does this match my current goals and dreams? Does it fit into my schedule without killing myself? Does it challenge me to step out of my comfort zone and become stronger? Does this reflect my authentic self? Does this light a fire under feet and fuel my passion?

When you answer these questions… or better yet, make up your own… feel it in your body, heart and mind. If it feels right and expansive, go for it. If it feels off and constrictive, let it go. By taking responsibility for creating the life you desire in your own way, it opens the door to opportunities, relationships and pathways to serve your highest good. Your life, your journey, your process becomes your one-of-kind creation. Your way is the true way.

Honor yourself, listen to yourself, trust yourself, bow down to yourself…  you the almighty guru.

  1. A God has no role here. It is man himself creating his own lifestyle and developing his own world outlook with the guidance of his friends, teacher, and self-help books. It appears you are a rationalist.A pleasing writing style!
